Kerrie here. Allow me to introduce you to my business: Curtain Call Consultancy. It’s a copywriting and content creation service, with a specialism in the theatre industry. The heart of my business involves writing engaging and exciting long and short form copy, alongside social media assets and content for everyone in the industry – casts and creatives, venues, theatre companies (professional and amateur), so that you can focus your energy on your creative endeavours and ensure “the show goes on” to be the best it can be!
I can write copy for:
Blog posts: be they short and snappy or longer updates, these are any content you want to share with your audience. Working on your craft to prep for that next audition? Want to spread the word about the next show you’re mounting or involved in? Let me handle it, and help you shout it to the rooftops, as they say in Hamilton!
Articles: If you want to go more in depth on a particular subject and perhaps show off your skills and knowledge of your part of the industry with something more factual, an article may suit you! I’m looking at those creatives who, though an audience may not physically see them onstage, their presence is always felt and noticed: the producers, the directors, the costume, make up and lighting designers, the choreographers, the lighting technicians, the stage managers and so on here… you are the backbone of the theatrical vision and as Stine and Stone agree at the end of City of Angels: “I’m nothing without you!”
Newsletters: In this industry, engaging with our community is vital, but time to do so effectively is often hard to carve out amidst other commitments. So, instead of frantically scrambling to get that content together, why not put all the “Happy Talk” about what you’re up to and more in a fortnightly or monthly newsletter? This is a great way to foster those relationships with your audiences, and potentially reach new ones.
Your Website: A great website can be one tool in your arsenal for creating and cementing your presence in the industry, so keeping those pages regularly updated will keep you on the right track, and make “getting to know you” easy, as well as fun!
Social Media: Let your audiences know “What’s The Buzz” with written copy and assets for your social media platforms. I can also help implement social media strategy and manage your accounts.
So, that’s what my business does, but you might now be asking how it came about. English was always my “best” and most loved subject at school, and when I went to university, I always knew that I wanted to make a living writing in some shape or form, but the road to get there has taken some unexpected turns! My career started with a receptionist role, and then I moved onto marketing roles, in the healthcare and live music sectors. I learned a lot about myself and valuable skills from each of those jobs, and met some amazing people, but there was a common thread through each of them, they ended with a variant of “we like you, but”...
We like you, but we haven’t managed to deliver on our commitment to making the office accessible to your needs, so we’re going down the road of YOU being the one who needs to improve. We like you, but we don’t have the budget to keep you on. We like you but don’t feel you’re ready yet.
It’s exhausting and so demoralising navigating a society that (for the most part anyway) isn’t set up for you to succeed – both in physical accessibility and in the ways people think. I have Cerebral Palsy and I’m constantly up against people’s perceptions of me and my capabilities; the positive and negative.
While I was chasing down that traditional job security, my love of theatre kept me going. I eventually started writing reviews and opinion pieces for one of the major arts websites. I’ve been doing that for nine years now, with a few other contributions to other websites and publications here and there, both in the arts sector and beyond.
In 2018, I rebranded my theatre blog as “Wheelie Stagey” and set up a podcast of the same name in 2020. The blog was just a way for me to share my love of theatre, but I would often get complimented for my writing skills within that, too, and so I started to entertain the dream of “wouldn’t it be amazing to combine my love of theatre and my passion for words?”
I loved the idea of being freelance/self-employed. Still, it wasn’t until 2021 that I felt empowered to act on the feeling with incredible practical and emotional support and mentoring from the teams at Accessibility Partners and Creative Words. Here I am: a business ready to make my mark on the world, and I hope in turn start those much needed conversations about representation for disabled people in this industry, both onstage and off.
